To reduce carbon emissions, French lawmakers are considering banning flights where 2.5-hour-or-less train route alternatives exist.

The measure will now be voted on in the Senate later this month.

Despite an airline industry ravaged by the pandemic, the French government is choosing to focus on environmentalism- and it's not the first time.

According to BBC, "France's Citizens' Convention on Climate, which was created by President Emmanuel Macron in 2019 and included 150 members of the public, had proposed scrapping plane journeys where train journeys of under four hours existed."

The measure was never put into effect.

Austrian Airlines similarly cut a popular domestic flight route last year in favor of increasing the amount of greener train alternatives.
