One person was killed and five others were wounded after a gunman opened fire Thursday inside a furniture store in the city of Brian, located in the state of Texas, USA.

Brian city police said in a tweet that the shooter had been arrested.

Jason James, a police spokesman, told reporters that "around 2:30 in the afternoon, you reported that there had been shooting (...) The police found many victims at the site."

He explained that the shooting resulted in one dead and five wounded, including four seriously wounded, and they were all taken to the hospital.

This new incident comes hours after US President Joe Biden gave a speech at the White House in which he unveiled measures aimed at curbing the spread of firearms in the United States, where successive governments have failed to stop the repeated shooting incidents.

In the year 2020, more than 43,000 people were killed in the United States with firearms, including suicides, according to the Gun Violence Archive website. This organization counted 611 "mass shootings," in 2020, meaning that at least four casualties were reported, compared to 417 the previous year.

Since January 1, more than 4,000 people have been killed by a firearm in the United States.

But many Americans remain tightly attached to their weapons and have been quick to buy more of them since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
