MIS-C, or Multisystem inflammatory sydrome in children, is a condition where different parts of the body can experience inflammation, including the heart, lungs and kidneys.

Additionally, several other organs or body parts can be affected such as the brain, skin, eyes, and gastrointestinal organs, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Children with MIS-C can experience a plethora of symptoms, the most common of which is a fever. Other symptoms include gut pain, vomiting, diarrhea, neck pain, rash, bloodshot eyes, or intense fatigue.

Experts claim that the cause of MIS-C is unknown. However, doctors and specialists claim that the underlying reason MIS-C affects children is from being infected with the coronavirus, or even just being around someone with COVID-19.

In Jordan, a Senior Consultant Pediatric Cardiologist, Khaled Salaymeh, told Roya News English, that he has seen 29 cases of MIS-C, since cases began rising in the Kingdom around August 2020.

He explained that the youngest patient he has seen with MIS-C is a two-month-old infant.

Parents are urged to contact their child’s doctor, or hospital immediately if their children are showing any signs of MIS-C or COVID-19.

Additionally, parents must seek emergency care right away if their child is showing any of these warning signs:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Pain or pressure in the chest
  • Confusion
  • Inability to wake or remain awake
  • Pale, gray, or bluish skin or lips
  • Abdominal pain
