US President Joe Biden on Sunday avoided answering questions from journalists who asked him if New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, accused of sexual harassment, should resign.

Similarly, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called on Cuomo to consult himself to see if he was still able to stay in office, without going so far as to demand his resignation.

The cautious statements of Biden and Pelosi differ from those of other Democratic officials, including Chuck Schumer, who openly called on Cuomo to resign.

"The investigation is continuing and we want to see what he will bring," Biden said as he got off the presidential helicopter, Marine.

Pelosi confirmed to ABC that the women who accused the governor "should be taken seriously," stressing that "their accusations are dangerous."

"The governor loves New York and he has to consult his heart to see if he is still able to run the state effectively," she added.

Since February, eight women have accused Cuomo of inappropriate behavior and uttering inappropriate words, including a former employee who accused him of groping her under her shirt in 2020.

Andrew Cuomo, 63, the governor of New York State for ten years, considered these allegations "false" and refused to heed calls for his resignation, saying instead that people should wait for the results of the investigation.

Pelosi seems to adopt the same stance, stressing at the same time that she "has zero tolerance for sexual harassment." She added that the women who accuse Cuomo "have the right to know the outcome of the investigation just as well as the ruling," expressing hope that the results will be released quickly.
