The World Health Organization (WHO) announced Monday that the world will not see the end of the coronavirus pandemic before the end of this year.
According to the New York Times, the Executive Director of WHO's Health Emergencies Program Michael Ryan said that it will be possible to reduce the number of cases and deaths, however the pandemic will still be fatal.
Ryan added that it would be very premature and unrealistic to believe that the world will eliminate this virus by the end of 2021.
He indicated that the WHO is focusing on keeping coronavirus infections low and on helping prevent the emergence of mutated strains. He explained that prioritizing vaccinations for workers in the health sector and those who are vulnerable will help minimize the repercussions of the pandemic.
