Wednesday, Ghana is set to receive its first shipment of the AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID-19 vaccine distributed by the COVAX initiative, containing 600,000 doses.

COVAX aims to ensure that poorer countries will receive access to vaccines.

"The delivery of this shipment forms the beginning of what is expected to be the largest supply and distribution of vaccines in history," the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), said in a joint statement.

The statement added that frontline health workers and others at high-risk will be the first to receive the vaccine in Ghana.

Ghana has confirmed 80,759 coronavirus cases and 582 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
