Residents of southern Texas have rescued thousands of turtles this week as the state contends with unusually freezing weather.

The residents, some of whom do not have heating in their own homes, volunteered to help collect the turtles and bring them to a convention center where they could stay warm during the polar front.

More than 3,500 turtles have so far been rescued.

It is not yet known when they will be able to be returned to the sea, given the turbulent conditions in the state.

“We’re trying to do the best we can to save as many turtles as possible,” said Ed Caum, executive director of the South Padre Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, to the Associated Press Wednesday.
