Monday, an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale hit western and central Argentina, causing residents to panic, however, there were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage, according to the National Institute for Earthquake Prevention.

The earthquake struck at 11:46 pm local time (Tuesday 02.46 GMT), with its epicenter in Pocitos in the San Juan Province, about 1,000 kilometers from Buenos Aires near the Chilean border, according to the American Institute of Geophysics.

A series of aftershocks followed the earthquakes. An aftershock measuring at 5.0 struck 27 kilometers southwest of Nueve de Julio, around 1,000 kilometers east of the first earthquake almost 20 minutes later.

A 4.9 magnitude quake came in the same area as the first, followed by a 5.3 magnitude aftershock.

According to CNN, the 4.9, 5.0 and 5.3-magnitude quakes are considered aftershocks as they are smaller in magnitude than the main quake and in the same area.

Electricity and power was cut off temporarily in some cities in the San Juan Province shortly after the earthquake.

The quakes were felt in the provinces of Mendoza, Cordoba, Santa Fe, La Rioja and Buenos Aires.

According to data made available by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), the earthquake posed no threat of forming a tsunami at this time.
