The United Kingdom completed its formal separation from the European Union after 47 years of membership. Britain stopped following EU rules at 11 PM GMT and the new arrangements came into effect.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK has the ability to do things 'differently and better' now that Brexit is over. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon whose intention is take an independent Scotland back into the EU tweeted "Scotland will be back soon, Europe. Keep the light on."

UK ministers have warned citizens about possible disruption in the weeks following the end of brexit. However, officials insisted that the new border system is 'ready to go.'

Following the first customs checks after the separation, the Eurotunnel spokesperson John Keefe said, "It all went fine, everything's running just as it was before 11 PM."

Britain had officially left the EU on Jan. 31 but remained a part of its trading rules for a little under a year until negotiations regarding future economic cooperation were finalized and a treaty was agreed upon on Christmas Eve.
