Monday, the Minister of Health Nathir Obeidat held a press conference to discuss the latest developments in the pandemic.

Obeidat said the cases being discharged from hospitals are more than the cases being admitted, which is a good sign.

Additionally, there has been a significant decrease in the rates of new cases and deaths, he said.

Obeidat's claims are cemented by Jordan recording a significant decrease in the number of COVID-19 deaths and infections from Saturday Dec. 12 to Friday Dec. 18 in comparison to the previous week.

The Ministry of Health issued a weekly COVID-19 report which showed 16,055 coronavirus cases and 232 deaths. In comparison, Dec. 5 to Dec. 11 had 94 more deaths and 5,051 more COVID-19 cases.

The age range most exposed to the virus is the 25 to 30 age bracket, and they are also the most vulnerable to contracting it, said Obeidat.

In light of the newly discovered mutated COVID-19 strain found in the UK, Obeidat said that the virus has mutated several times, but the latest mutation is the most rapid in its infection.

Moreover, Jordan has suspended all flights incoming from the UK in attempts to keep the mutated strain from entering the Kingdom. Other precautions will be taken, and the government is currently looking into all virus mutations in order to determine the best way to efficiently respond, said Obeidat.

Despite flight suspensions, the government is planning to follow up with all travelers who arrived from the UK over the past few days.
