Jordan ranked 79 worldwide and ninth in the Arab world on the United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Global Knowledge Index (GKI) for the year 2020.

The UAE ranked 15 worldwide and first among Arab countries, followed by Qatar in the 39th place globally and second in the Arab world, then Saudi Arabia ranked 42 globally and third among Arab countries.

Switzerland came first in the Index for the fourth year in a row with a score of 73.6.

The GKI comes out on an annual basis and tracks the knowledge performance of countries based on seven different areas: "pre-university education, technical and vocational education and training, higher education, research, development and innovation, information and communications technology, economy and the general enabling environment," according to the UNDP's website.

The index covers 138 countries around the world and aims to guide and inform policy-makers, researchers, civil society and the private sector to cooperate in various aspects of policies to strengthen knowledge-based societies and fill knowledge gaps.
