Tuesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi took part in a tripartite meeting with the foreign affairs ministers of Greece and Cyprus to further develop relations and to expand cooperation following a flurry of diplomatic activities in the region.

According to a statement made by the Greek Ministry, the meeting examined events in the region including developments in the Eastern Mediterranean region and EU-Jordan relations.

Recently, Cyprus has been building alliances with Greece to tackle what they perceive as ‘Turkish aggression’ in the region.

Last week, Greece joined forces with Egypt and Cyprus to form a buffer to tackle the issue. Naval and aerial drills occurred off the coast of Egypt in light of this, with forces from the UAE and France joining. Additionally, Saudi Arabian, American, Bahraini, Sudanese, Jordanian, Italian and German forces participated as observers in the exercise dubbed “Medusa 10."

Safadi said that tension in the Eastern Mediterranean can be resolved through negotiations on the basis of respect for international law.

“It is the first time in the post-WWII era that Athens concludes a bilateral agreement of this magnitude. What brought the [countries] together in such an urgent way is Turkey and the overreaching revisionism of Ankara. It is an arrangement aiming at containing Turkey,” said Professor of International Relations at Panteion University in Athens, Kostas Ifantis.

According to Al-Monitor, the president of the Emirates Policy Center in Abu Dhabi, Ebtesam al-Ketbi said the since 2013, regional tensions with Turkey occurred as Ankara continued showing support for the Muslim Brotherhood, and ‘exploiting’ religion as a means for regional expansion and policy.

In terms of Palestine, Safadi emphasized that the issue must be resolved on the basis of the two-state solution.

Additionally, he added that efforts must be made to support and find a political solution in Libya without foreign interference in its affairs.

In turn, the Cypriot foreign minister said that his country's relationship with Jordan is a model to be followed, and that the historic relationship is getting stronger every day.

He added that Jordan is a beacon of stability and peace in the region and plays a pivotal role, adding that Cyprus is committed to working with the Kingdom.
