Tuesday, 90-year-old Margaret Keenan of Coventry became the first person to receive an initial dose of the Pfizer vaccine following the country’s roll-out of the biggest vaccination program in British history in attempts to tackle the pandemic.

The vaccination program prioritized individuals over 80, care home workers, medical personnel and social care staff, dubbing them “V-Day” patients, who will receive a second vaccination in 21 days time.

The UK has been one of the worst-affected countries in the world, with more than 61,000 deaths in the outbreak from 1.6 million cases.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, called this roll-out a "huge step forward in the UK's fight against coronavirus."

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock called the step a “key moment," even offering to have the vaccine administered on live television to diminish public fears.

Vaccine approval was given last Wednesday, sparking a race against time to prepare vaccination centrtd across the UK.

A total of 40 million vaccines have been obtained by the UK, which is sufficient for 20 million people with 800,000 in the first batch.

The UK is expected to receive up to four million doses by the end of December.
