Monday, according to the EU earth observation program ‘Copernicus,' November 2020 was the warmest November on record by a clear margin.

From September to November, boreal autumn temperatures were way above average, spanning from the Middle East to Northern Europe, with conditions being relatively warm over north Africa.

In the observatory's monthly climate report, a few days before the fifth anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement, it was reported that Dec. 2019 to Nov. 2020 was 0.65 degrees Celsius warmer than the average between 1981 and 2010.

The temperature for this period was less than 0.01°C below that of the 12 month period ending in May 2020 and Sep. 2016, the two warmest periods in this record.

Additionally, 2016 marked the warmest calendar year on record, with a global temperature of 0.63 degrees Celsius above that for 1981 to 2010.

For Jan. to Nov. 2020, the average 2016 and 2020 temperatures were on a par.

As Dec. 2016 had a much smaller temperature anomaly than Nov. 2020, it would take a large, but not unprecedented fall in the temperature anomaly from Nov. to Dec. 2020 for 2020 not to be similar or even marginally warmer than 2016.

The year 2019 held the second warmest complete calendar year in this data record; with temperatures of 0.59 degrees Celsius above average.
