Thursday marks the day chosen to celebrate men and to spread awareness of the issues men face worldwide. The aim of this day is to to facilitate the promotion of discussions in a more open manner on many issues, such as mental health and suicide rates.

According to a BBC Future study, the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 is suicide.

The study stated that women commit suicide at much lower rates than men.

In the UK and Australia, men are three times more likely to commit suicide than women. In the US, men are 3.5 times more likely, and in Russia and Argentina, four times more likely.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 40 percent of countries have more than 15 suicides per 100,000 men and only 1.5 percent of countries show a rate that high for women.
