A medical team in pediatric surgery and anesthesia, with the participation of pediatricians at the Jordan University Hospital, conducted a major surgery on an infant to repair a congenital esophageal obstruction.

The surgery was done in two stages, and took place despite the difficult circumstances and challenges caused by COVID-19.

In a statement Sunday, JUH said that the operation was carried out using a laparoscope in the first stage, when the infant was just two days old, and then the upper and lower extremities of the esophagus were tightened using modern technology that is inserted into the chest cavity.

This process made the esophagus connect naturally six weeks later in a successful manner.

Cases like these were previously remedied by raising the stomach as an alternative to the esophagus or by using a link from the colon.

This method is considered the best that is performed in international centers as it avoids all complications and difficulties resulting from the more traditional operations.

The infant was able to leave the hospital immediately after treatment.

The medical team consisted of Senior Consultant Pediatric Surgeon, Najeh Al-Omari, Consultant Pediatric Surgeon, Raed Al-Taher, Pediatric Surgery Resident, Heba Daradkeh, Pediatric Surgery Specialist, Ahmed Owaisat, Anaesthetic Consultant, Omar Ababneh and a team of anesthesiologists, pediatricians and preterm nurses.

According to the World Bank, Jordan is the number one medical tourism provider in the Arab region and among the top five in the world.
