Wednesday, the Financial Crimes Control Authority in Copenhagen accused a Danish company of violating European Union sanctions imposed on Syria by supplying Russian military aircraft deployed in the country plunged into war with fuel.

According to a statement by the Danish Public Prosecutor in charge of dealing with serious economic and international crimes cases, the value of the financial transfers made between 2015 and 2017 amounted to 647 million kroner, about $100 million.

"On 33 occasions, a Danish company sold a total of about 172 thousand tons of kerosene to Russian companies, and as a result the material was delivered to Syria in violation of the European Union sanctions imposed on Syria," the statement added.

The statement did not name the company concerned, but Danish media reported that it is the shipping company "Dan Pankering," which is believed to have conducted commercial dealings with the Russian company "Maritim," which is responsible for supplying fuel to the Russian aircraft deployed in Syria.

The Danish Public Prosecutor in charge of serious economic and international crimes cases said that the fuel was transported through intermediaries to the waters of the Mediterranean and then to an unknown destination in the Syrian port of Baniyas.

She added that the accusation was also leveled against a holding company and the director of one of the companies involved, citing eight of the 33 transfers.

Since December 2011, the European Union has imposed sanctions on the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which are subject to annual review.

The sanctions include an oil embargo and a freeze on the assets of the Syrian Central Bank in the European Union.

The conflict in Syria erupted in early 2011 after Syrian forces violently suppressed anti-government protests, which led to violence that later left hundreds of thousands of deaths.

Russia's military intervention in the conflict in 2015 turned the equation and tipped the balance of government forces after the Russian Air Force supported them with air strikes that helped them regain large areas of the country that had been controlled by opposition and militant factions.
