Tuesday, Caretaker Prime Minister Hassan Diab announced that Lebanon will go into full lockdown from Nov. 14 to Nov. 30 in an effort to contain the country's coronavirus cases, which have skyrocketed in recent weeks.

"If the Lebanese people abide by the measures, and we succeed in containing the virus by registering low numbers, then we will have saved the people," Diab said.

Since the deadly Beirut Port blast Aug. 4 and the subsequent resignation of the government, the caretaker government has made several unsuccessful attempts to impose a lockdown in Lebanon.

Two weeks after the blast, the government ordered a lockdown that ended after just days after protests from the restaurant syndicate demanded the lockdown be lifted out of economic concern.

Since then, municipalities have attempted to enforce lockdowns of their own, but they are rarely enforced.

Many citizens say they simply cannot afford the lockdown in light of the country's worst crisis since its 1975-1990 Civil War, which has crippled the economy and seen the Lebanese Lira lose over 80 percent of its value, sending over 60 percent of Lebanese into poverty.

Diab Tuesday acknowledged economic concern, but said the people must be held responsible for their lack of adherance to safety protocols.

Lebanon has recorded nearly 100,000 cases since the outbreak of the coronavirus in March.
