Scientists have discovered that people who are recovering from COVID-19 develop a faster and more effective immune system if they encounter the virus once again.

Researchers at the Rockefeller University in New York stated that not only will the immune system remember the virus, but it also develops certain antibodies after recovery, according to the British newspaper The Guardian.

The immune system prepares the body to launch a fast and powerful attack in response to a  new viral attack.

"It's very good news," said the university's professor and Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Immunology, Michel Nussenzweig.

Nussenzweig added that expectations show that people are able to rapidly produce antibodies and fight infection in a large number of cases.

It is unclear how long the immune system will preserve the memory of the 'shape' of the coronavirus, but Nussenzweig estimated that this protection will last years.

This explains why the number of those infected with COVID-19 more than once is small.

When a person becomes infected with the coronavirus, the human immune system launches a multiple attack targeting the virus.

The T-cells represent one of the forms of protection, as they search for and destroy infected cells in an attempt to contain the spread of the virus. B-cells release the antibodies into the blood.

Once the infection ends in the body, the immune system stops fighting, but it remembers the infection by storing information in the T and B-cells.

The study included 87 people with COVID-19, and the researchers said that the antibodies diminished, receding by more than a fifth from the peak level within 6 months.

Upon examining the immune system of the sample individuals, the researchers noted that six months after the infection, the antibodies made by B-cells had evolved to become more powerful than before.
