VIDEO: Presidential race remains tight in US

Trump claimed he won the US Presidential Election in an unprecedented speech from the White House Wednesday morning. As predicted, he affirmed that he intends to go to the Supreme Court to contest "fraud."

However, a presidential candidate needs to reach 270 votes from the Electoral College in order to win the presidency, which is dependent upon the popular vote in each state. So far, neither candidate has neared 270 votes and the votes from several "swing" states, meaning states that could historically vote either conservative or liberal, are yet to be tallied.

The focus is now on four key states: Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Arizona. How these states vote are all determining factors in who will win the presidency.

The Associated Press has projected democratic candidate Joe Biden to win Arizona, the first time a liberal has one the historically-red state in 25 years.

Though one of the most controversial facets of the American democracy, in the US, it is entirely possible for a candidate to have more votes from the people- known as the "popular vote"- but still lose the election from less Electoral College votes. This is what happened in 2016, with Hillary Clinton having garnered three million more votes than President Trump. It appears that whomever wins the election, Joe Biden will have won the popular vote.

The race is closer than many polls predicted, which had Biden coming out with an easy win. Trump voters came out in large numbers, a figure that likely was not accounted for in the polls given that phenomena known as the "shy Trump voter."

Early data shows more women voting liberal than the 2016 election, with men moving further right.

Analysts say patience is key in announcing a winner. Because of the unique nature of the election and the sheer amount of absentee ballots casted in light of the pandemic, the earliest a winner will be announced will likely be well into Wednesday evening Jordanian time.

Biden's campaign manager called Trump's claim that he had won a second term "Outrageous, unprecedented, and incorrect."
