Mosques will only be allowed to open for Friday prayer during the upcoming post-elections lockdown, said a source from the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Tuesday.

The government had previously announced a weekly lockdown every Friday until the end of the year, allowing worshippers to make their way to mosques on foot.

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh had announced the total lockdown Sunday to start as soon as the election results are announced and until 6am Sunday (November 15).

National Committee for Epidemics member Bassam Hijjawi said the lockdown was imposed to prevent celebrations and gatherings after the elections. He also predicts that no further long lockdowns will be imposed after November 15.

The 19th Parliamentary Elections are scheduled for November 10. Citizens took to social media to criticise the government's decision not to postpone the elections, considering the COVID-19 situation in the Kingdom.
