The Algerian presidency announced Tuesday that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who is in voluntary quarantine after the suspected infection of senior officials in the presidency, has entered the military hospital, but "his health condition is stable, and does not cause any concern."

The hospitalization of Tebboune comes five days before the referendum on the constitutional amendments that he proposed to build a "new Algeria."

The 74-year-old Algerian president is also supposed to inaugurate, on Wednesday evening, the Mosque of Algiers, the third largest mosque in the world, on the occasion of the Prophet’s birthday.

After weeks during which the spread of infection slowed, Algeria, whose borders remain closed, witnessed an increase in COVID-19 cases two weeks ago.

The country of 44 million people has recorded about 57,000 cases since the first case was detected on February 25, including more than 1930 deaths and 40,000 recoveries.

Sunday, Prime Minister Abdelaziz Jarad condemned the "relaxation" of the people in terms of adherence to the prevention measures, warning of "the re-emergence of hotbeds of infection again."
