The battle for the US presidential election, scheduled for November 3, proceeds, but only a handful of major states will decide the race between Democrat, Joe Biden, and President, Donald Trump.

Trump gained a slight victory in 2016, by defeating in several states including Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina, Wisconsin and Arizona.

Current polls show that Trump’s popularity is declining in all of those six states by a slight margin in some of them.

According to average state polls on the RealClearPolitics website, Trump is also down by a narrow margin in another three states, Georgia, Iowa and Ohio, which he previously won in 2016.

Information on votes in key states is as follows:

Pennsylvania

This is Joe Biden’s home state and is the most important state in the region known as the "Rust Belt", which is the name for the areas in north-central USA that have experienced decades of industrial decline.

It is expected that former President, Barack Obama, will participate in Wednesday’s campaigns in Philadelphia to support his former Vice President, Joe Biden.

Larger cities in Pennsylvania will vote heavily for Biden, while the rural West and conservative mid-country individuals are expected to vote for Trump, leaving the suburbs and Northeastern regions crucial for the vote.

According to the RealClearPolitics website’s average poll, Biden has a 5.6% point lead.

Michigan

Trump won Michigan in 2016 by a narrow margin.

Trump visited the state to emphasize his quest to restore American values, but voters are concerned about the repercussions of the coronavirus on the economy and how effective Trump's management of the crisis is.

Gretchen Whitmer, the Democratic Governor of Michigan has often clashed with the President, and her decisions to impose a lockdown angered the conservatives.

Demonstrators carrying weapons organized demonstrations in front of the state government building during the summer, and members of a right-wing group were recently arrested for planning to kidnap Whitmer.

According to the RealClearPolitics website’s average poll, Biden has a 7.2 % point lead.

Wisconsin

Democrat Hillary Clinton chose not to campaign in Wisconsin in 2016, and voters punished her for that.

This year, Democrats focused more on Wisconsin and announced that they will hold their national convention there, despite their subsequent gathering online due to fears of coronavirus.

Both Trump and Biden campaigned in Wisconsin, which was also visited by current Vice President Mike Pence and Kamala Harris, the potential Vice President candidate of Biden.

According to the RealClearPolitics website’s average poll, Biden has a 6.3 % point lead.

Florida

Florida is the largest swing state for voting and has an increasing population density.

Republicans are escalating their defenses in Florida, while Democrats are accusing them of suppressing votes, especially in communities of people of color.

Voters from South America will be very important, and polls currently show less support for Democrats than in 2016.

However, surveys show that elderly people are distancing themselves from voting for Trump due to his coronavirus crisis management.

Experts consider Florida as a firewall ‘protector’ for Trump, and if he loses Floridian vote, Trump will likely lose the White House seat.

According to the RealClearPolitics website’s average poll, Biden has a 1.4 % point lead.

North Carolina

This is a traditionally conservative state, where Trump won by three points in 2016. However both Republican and Democratic parties now recognize that the race is close between them.

The state's Democratic Governor is praised for his balanced management of the coronavirus crisis.

Republicans organized a national convention in the state, but most of it was eventually held online.

According to the RealClearPolitics website’s average poll, Biden has a 2.7 % point lead.

Arizona

Arizona has been a Republican state for decades, but voters are changing as the numbers of voters from South America and California in the state increase.

Conservative voters appreciate Trump's efforts to impose restrictions on immigration and building a wall on the Mexican border..

However, Trump has risked his luck by repeatedly offending the reputation of the late Senator John McCain, who was representing Arizona. McCain’s widow, Cindy McCain also announced her support for Biden.

According to the RealClearPolitics website’s average poll, Biden has a 4.0 % point lead.

Iowa

Trump won an easy victory in Iowa four years ago, defeating Clinton by nearly 10 points, but voter results look closer this time in the agricultural state.

Trump held a rally in Iowa last week, indicating that he was on the defensive in a state he was supposed to win.

According to the RealClearPolitics website’s average poll, Biden has a 1.2 % point lead.

Georgia

Democrats have never won the presidential race in Georgia since Bill Clinton won in 1992, but the state has leaned toward Democratic parties in recent years.

Trump held a campaign rally in Georgia on Friday, indicating that he may be in a vulnerable position there.

According to the RealClearPolitics website’s average poll, Biden has a 1.2 % point lead.

Ohio

Ohio has 18 votes within the election and is considered a major prize.

Trump defeated Clinton in Ohio by 8.1 points, but the polls show a close race this time in the industrial Midwestern state.

Biden visited the state and emphasized the role he played in helping to save the US auto-industry when he was former Vice President.

According to the RealClearPolitics website’s average poll, Biden has a 0.6 % point lead.
