A total of 907 females have been victims of rape and sexual assault, including 200 gang rapes in the first nine months of 2020, according to a civil rights and legal aid organisation in Bangladesh, Ain O Salish Kendra.

Hundreds of demonstrations took place in Bangladesh, demanding tougher penalties for rape and sexual assault prepetrators, following a video clip emerging showing men attacking a woman while sexually assaulting her.

Protesters called for the resignation of the Bangladeshi Minister of Interior due to what they described as the government's failure to address the alarming rise in cases of sexual violence among women and girls.

"The government of Bangladesh must fulfill its promises and respond to activists' requests to take strict measures in combatting sexual violence and supporting survivors of such incidents" said South Asia’s director of the Human Rights Watch, Meenakshi Ganguly.

The victim of the incident has revealed to local media that the video was published after the men blackmailed and asked for money.

The video was published upon her refusal.
