What do we know about Trump's COVID-19 infection?

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, had announced on Friday, that he and his wife Melania were infected with coronavirus in a tweet saying: "Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!"

Trump's coronavirus infection further complicates the U.S. election campaign and the acceleration of related events.

In the following, a summary of the current state of events:

Where is Donald Trump now?

Trump will spend the coming days in a military hospital in a suburb of Washington to receive COVID-19 treatment, but he will continue to work, as the White House reported Friday.

"President Trump will operate from the presidential offices at Walter Reed Hospital over the next few days," said Trump campaign spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany.

All pre-announced campaign events ahead of the November 3 elections would either be held virtually or would be postponed, said Trump’s campaign manager, Bill Stephen.

Trump's infection raises questions about whether the debates with his Democratic rival, Joe Biden, scheduled for later this month, will go as scheduled.

What treatment is he receiving?

The president is "tired but in good spirits" and is receiving experimental treatment for COVID-19, said White House physician Sean Connelly.

Trump received a single dose of a mixture of antibodies from the Regeneron laboratory, said Connelly.

Trump is receiving remdesivir after consulting with specialists, said McEnany.

The president "does not need additional oxygen,” added McEnany in a statement on Friday.

The 74-year-old president has mild symptoms, said White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows on Friday.

Given that he is 74 years old, Trump is "at greater risk of contracting severe disease", according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Trump will be monitored closely to watch for a wide range of common symptoms of the virus, which include fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches and headaches.

What are his symptoms?

Trump was not immediately quarantined after his close adviser Hope Hicks was tested positive for the virus on Thursday.

Instead, he boarded a plane to New Jersey where he attended a fundraising event at his golf club and gave a speech surrounded by tens of people before returning to the White House.

Trump showed mild symptoms at the Thursday night event and appeared to be inactive, said The New York Times quoting unnamed sources.

One of the sources told the newspaper that he showed symptoms similar to those of a cold.

How did he become infected?

It is not clear how Trump contracted the coronavirus, but he defied medical advice that recommends wearing masks and in many cases, he met large groups of people.

The alarm rang in the White House when Hicks was tested positive. She is a central figure in Trump's inner circle and has traveled with him several times over the past week.

She also participated closely in his preparations for Tuesday's debate against Biden. During the televised event, not many of Trump's guests were wearing masks.

Who also contracted the virus in the White House?

Vice President Mike Pence, who will replace Trump if his health deteriorates, was tested for COVID-19, and it came back negative on Friday, as did Trump's son Barron.

The President's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner, two of the top White House advisers, also tested negative, as did Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin and Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar.

And Killian Conway, a former White House aide, announced Friday night that she had the virus with "mild" symptoms.

Rona McDaniel, chair of the Republican National Committee, also announced on Friday that she had tested positive for coronavirus several days ago.

Trump campaign manager Bill Stephen, 42, said his test result was positive, as US media reported, and he is in quarantine with mild symptoms.

Many of the top politicians, officials and other military officers who work or visit the White House were tested on Friday.
