The Jordnian scientist and founder of the We Love Reading organisation, Rana Dajani, won this year’s Nansen Refugee Award for the Middle East and North Africa, on Monday.

She received the award as a result of the effort she made to encourage children, both Jordanian and refugees, to read.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees released a statement saying 'We Love Reading' has trained more than 4,000 children to become reading ambassadors since 2006.

The Deputy Representative in Jordan, Carolyn Ennis, said “Regardless of where you come from or what language you speak, learning to read and enjoy the magic of books is an essential part of childhood. But Dr. Rana and ‘We Love Reading’ have gone far beyond this in also creating hope for generations of refugee and Jordanian children.”

The Nansen Refugee Award is awarded annually to an individual in recognition for an outstanding service offered to refugees, displaced or stateless people.
