“The high Tawjihi results this year will affect the admission of students, because majors, especially medicine and engineering, will witness intense competition,” said the spokesperson for the Ministry of Higher Education and the director of the Unified Admission Unit, Mohannad Al-Khatib, in an interview on Roya’s Donya Ya Donya morning show.

He added that “the minimum rates of acceptance in public universities will rise because of how high the results are.”

Al-Khatib noted that the number of students who achieved 97% last year were 2700 students, as opposed to the 4400 this year, which will result in a review of university acceptance rates.

He stressed that many factors affect students’ acceptance into university. Amongst them, how admission forms are filled, wisdom in choosing a major, as well as the number of seats the Ministry sets for each major; noting that it is still too early to set a number of seats.

The most prominent issue faced by the Unified Admission Unit, as Al-Khatib said, is when students listen to rumors and are socially pressured to choose a certain popular major, specifically by their parents, without taking into account what the workforce requires.

Al-Khatib added that there are 15 new required majors proposed by the Ministry this year related to the digital economy. He advised students to view the explanatory videos available on the website page of the Unified Admission Unit, and to specifically visit “Choose Your Major” page to study the acceptance rates of the past year while taking into account the high results of this year.

He also advised students to place more than five options in the university admission form after taking into consideration available majors, not only their desires without relying on the possibility of transferring the major later.

As for Jordanian students who hold non-Jordanian high school certificates, he said that they can easily apply for enrollment in Jordanian universities and pay the fees online. The exam they have to pass in order to be accepted can also be taken online, he said.
