Nearly 90% of Democrats approve of U.S. Senator, Kamala Harris, the first Black woman and Asian American nominee for vice presidency, as their new vice-president, according to the Reuters and Ipsos poll published on Wednesday.

Harris is more popular than presidential candidate, Joe Biden, and is expected to boost his popularity with women, youth and some Republicans.

The public opinion survey showed that 60% of Americans believe Harris would represent a “major milestone” for the country.

Harris, is the daughter of immigrants and a former state attorney general, prosecutor and became is currently the second Black female senator in American history.

After Biden announced he was running with Harris, he reached an 8-point advantage.

Thirty-eight percent of Americans said they would vote for Donald Trump and Mike Pence, while 46% said they would support Biden and Harris.

Biden already had an advantage over Trump, with 53% reported having a favourable view of him but has gained leverage with Harris’ 60% favourable views.

A quarter of Republicans said they had a favourable view of Harris, but only a fifth of Republicans had similar views of Biden.

Minutes after the announcement was made on Tuesday, President Trump described Harris as nasty, horrible and disrespectful.

The poll was done online, involving 1,000 citizens across the United States —389 Republicans and 419 Democrats.
