A Palestinian family from Jenin, in the occupied West Bank, have named their newborn girl ‘Beirut’ in solidarity with Lebanon after the port blast that has devastated the capital city.

Photographs circulated across social media of baby Beirut, amid hundreds of comments from people expressing their sympathy for the Lebanese and their sorrow over the catastrophe that has left the city in ruins.

On Tuesday, the Lebanese capital Beirut suffered a huge explosion, killing dozens and injuring thousands.

Rescue operations are still ongoing in the port area and the Lebanese government has announced the launch of a large-scale investigation to find out the cause.

According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health on Sunday, at least 60 people are missing, and specialised teams are continuing search efforts.
