No new coronavirus cases have been recorded in the holy sites during this year’s socially distant pilgrimage, announced the Saudi Arabian authorities on Sunday.

Pilgrims performed the farewell Circumambulation in Mecca’s smallest pilgrimage in modern history earlier on Sunday.

All pilgrims must complete a compulsory quarantine period after the rituals are over.

Approximately 10,000 Muslims, all residents of Saudi Arabia, were allowed to take part in this year’s pilgrimage— a fraction of last year’s 2.5 million worshippers.

As for the stone throwing ritual, this year, pilgrims were given sterile stones in bags to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while picking stones off of the ground.

Saudi Arabia’s King, Salman bin Abdulaziz, said the pilgrimage this year required double the usual effort from local authorities, despite the small number of pilgrims.

Usually pilgrims pay thousands of dollars to cover expenses, but this year the Saudi Arabian government covered all costs including meals, accommodation and health care, participants reported.
