Electoral candidates are not permitted to provide food or sweets during the election campaign, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) has announced.

Instead, candidates must supply hand sanitisers inside the electoral headquarters, said IEC spokesperson, Jihad Momani, on Wednesday.

The IEC has also established restrictions on marketing material, and has prevented the organising of political rallies, said Momani during an interview with Roya’s Nabd Al-Balad on Wednesday evening.

Momani said it is common for Jordanians to threaten to boycott elections when they are unhappy with the government, referencing a Roya poll of 17,000 people which showed 91% of participants would not vote in the upcoming of election.

The General Director of Al-Hayat Centre for Civil Society Development, Amer Bani Amer, said there cannot be elections without rallies.
