Hundreds of activists, jurists, and parliament members gathered in front of the Jordanian parliament on Wednesday, protesting violence against women in Jordan.

The demonstration, organised by civil and women's rights groups, came in response to reports of violent crimes against women in Jordan over the last week, which had led to an outpouring of anger across social media.

“We are in front of the House of Representatives because of what it symbolises,” said one of the organisers, Ghazal Otoum.

“We want no more leniency when it comes to domestic violence crimes and honor killings.”

Protestors carried signs calling for legislation amendment, including the abolition of articles 98, 99 and 52.

These laws entitle criminals to reduced sentences under the pretext of honour and give families the power to drop the victim’s rights.

"Yesterday it was Isra. Today it's Ahlam. Who will it be tomorrow?" read one placard.

"No honour in the crime," said another.

Another read: "Men of quality... don't fear equality!"

And: "This is for the ladies killed by the men who should protect them."

Member of Parliament, Qais Ziadin, told Roya: “We cannot live in this era and this century with such horrific and unfair laws against Jordanian women.

“Today, these young people are demanding change and asking the Jordanian parliament to change these laws."
