Irbid was hit by a shell Monday evening as Jordan became caught up in the Israeli-Syrian crossfire.

Emergency services tackled a blaze that broke out in a deserted area in the north of the city, near the Syrian border, after residents reported an explosion at around 9:45pm.

Authorities sealed off the area and nearby citizens were evacuated.

No injuries were reported, said the spokesperson of the Public Security Directorate.

The Syrian News Agency SANA said the Syrian Air Defense Force was responding to a suspected Israeli attack targeting Damascus.

An Iranian-backed ammunition depot located on the outskirts of the Syrian capital was struck by Israeli missiles, killing Iranian fighters, sources told Al Jazeera.
