Upon the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II, the Ministry of Social Development has started today to distribute magnetic food cards to 30,000 underprivileged families across the Kingdom who are facing tough living conditions.

The food aid covers beneficiaries in all of the Kingdom's governorates, including unemployed persons, day laborers and impoverished families that receive housing benefits under the royal initiatives and within the context of the Hashemite leadership's approach to alleviating the difficult conditions for the targeted groups.

King Abdullah has directed the government to provide protection to day laborers for their key role in building the country and help them meet their basic needs and improve their living standards under the exceptional circumstances the Kingdom is experiencing due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With the prepaid cards, families can buy food and other consumer items worth JD100 from the military and civil consumers corporations markets in all of the governorates of the Kingdom, according to the Ministry.

It said that the selection of the families benefiting from the royal initiative is based on databases of the unified national registry in the National Aid Fund and the civil status records under criteria that "achieve fairness and transparency."

The food aid under the royal initiative is distributed twice a year and covers the needs of each of the poor families for a period of six months, but it was expanded this year to include the unemployed and the day workers, who were laid off amid the exceptional circumstances in the Kingdom.
