The Ministry of Agriculture warned that the intense desert locust breeding and the changing wind direction constitute a fertile environment for the spread of locust swarms during the coming period.
In a press statement on Sunday, February 23, the Ministry confirmed its full preparedness in accordance with the desert locust response plan, and surveillance operations in southern regions to ensure ready monitoring mechanisms in place.
The Ministry said, the desert locust threat is still "present," and follow-up on the swarms' movement in the breeding and neighboring countries has shown their breeding is still continuing with great intensity, especially in Africa, and Red Sea shores, despite the ongoing control operations.
A number of locust swarms in Saudi Arabia have been recorded, as some have entered the Arab Gulf states, the statement added.
