NCHR: US peace plan wastes Palestinians right of self-determination

The US peace plan has wasted one of the most important principles of human rights, the right of self-determination of the Palestinian people, the National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) stated.

In a statement issued today, the NCHR said this right was recognized by the United Nations as the basis for peace and stability in the Middle East, noting that the US peace plan ignores the principles of international humanitarian law, especially the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, which considers occupation a temporary situation, and the occupying state may not alter the demographic and legal status of the occupied territories.

"The US peace plan will remain illegitimate and cannot be respected or accepted. It is normal for Arab and all peace-loving countries, that believe in justice and human rights, to reject it," the statement added.

As for the unilateral US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and moving the US Embassy to the holy city, NCHR considered it a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, since it affects the legal and religious status of Jerusalem, and is unfair to the political rights of the Palestinian people, who are the legitimate owners of the land.

The Centre also condemned the call to resettle Palestinian refugees outside their homeland, which represents a confiscation of the hosting countries' rights of sovereignty over their own territory and threatens their vital interests.
