British Prime Minister Theresa May announced on Friday, May 24, 2019, her decision to resign as prime minister in the wake of the Brexit crisis.
In a speech outside 10 Downing Street, May said she will not leave office immediately, as she will step aside as leader of the Conservative Party on June 7, so as to give her Party the chance to elect a new leader.
May added that she will be in office when US President Donald Trump visits the United Kingdom on June 3 until June 5.
Earlier this month, British media had expected that May could set a date for her resignation in the coming days.
May had taken over as prime minister in 2016 after 52% of the UK voted to leave the EU, in June 23 poll.
