The General Iftaa' Department has announced that the sighting of Ramadan crescent moon (hilal) will be on next Sunday, May 5, 2019.
The Grand Mufti of Jordan, Mohammad Khalaileh said that the observation of the crescent moon will be held at 7:00 pm on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at King Hussein Bin Talal Mosque.
Spotting the crescent moon is an Islamic Sunna, as Prophet Mohammad told his followers: “Do not fast until you see the new moon, and do not break the fast until you see it, and if it is covered then complete the month.”
Seeing the crescent moon on the last night of Shaaban (the eighth month of the Islamic lunar calendar) is the only way to determine the start of the holy month of Ramadan.
