Minister of Water and Irrigation Ali Sobh said that desalination is the only alternative left to obtaining a safe and sustainable source of water to supply Jordan's current and future needs. Jordan has no alternative to water supply within national borders except desalination of the Red Sea.

During a lecture at the Royal National Defense College on Tuesday entitled "Water Policy in Jordan", The Minister said that the ministry is taking many new policies and improvements to increase efficiency, as well as preserving fresh water, reusing and recycling all available water, reducing waste of technical and administrative water, in addition to improving the efficiency of energy use in the treatment and distribution of water, and the introduction of renewable energy.

The Minister pointed out that the most important challenges facing the water sector is the scarcity of water resources, the inability to meet Jordan’s water needs, the widening gap between supply and demand, the excessive use of water resources, the high cost of energy, the operating cost and the low revenues, in addition to the impact of climate change on the water sector due to high temperatures and heat waves and reduced precipitation, which leads to a lack of feeding to surface and groundwater sources.

At the end of the lecture, which was attended by the leader and the chairman and members of the steering committee at the college, a discussion was held during which the lecturer answered the questions and queries of the students.
