Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Affairs Ayman Safadi received on Thursday a delegation of US congressmen visiting the Kingdom organized by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

During the meeting, Safadi stressed the importance of achieving a political solution to the Syrian crisis, adding that a political solution to the crisis would restore Syria's security and stability, preserve its unity and allow the voluntary return of refugees to their homeland.

He added that the Kingdom bears huge burdens on education, health and infrastructure sectors by hosting 1.3 million Syrian citizens whose life and educational needs must be secured by sustainable international cooperation. He pointed out that Jordan has exceeded its capacity in taking in refugees, stressing the importance of continued international help to shoulder responsibilities towards the refugees and help the Kingdom to bear these burdens.

Safadi also stressed the centrality of the Palestinian cause, and the importance of breaking the deadlock in the peace process to reach a two-state solution that guarantees the right of the Palestinian people to freedom and a state solution based on the border of 1967 with East Jerusalem as the capital according to the resolutions of international legitimacy and the Arab peace initiative.

Safadi stressed during the meeting the depth of strategic relations between the Kingdom and the United States of America on a number of levels, expressing appreciation of the Kingdom for the support provided by the United States, and discussed bilateral relations.
