His Majesty King Abdullah II met with former Prime Ministers at the Al-Husseiniya Palace on Monday, February 18, 2019, and discussed a number of domestic issues and regional developments.

During the meeting, His Majesty confirmed that there is a real intention into developing the political life in Jordan, pointing to his own vision in this regard, which was outlined in the Royal Discussion Papers.

King Abdullah pointed out that developing political life requires the cooperation of all, especially the political elite, adding that his recent meetings with the parliamentary blocs and civil society institutions aimed at encouraging them to submit ideas and proposals and identify political, economic and social priorities for the coming years.

All are partners in achieving progress for Jordan's benefit and they all have a responsibility in dealing with the current situation and the challenges facing the Kingdom, His Majesty said, emphasizing the important role of former prime ministers.

In terms of the economic situation, His Majesty noted the importance of moving forward in the economic reform if we are to reach the stage of self-reliance.

King Abdullah also highlighted the importance of the upcoming London Initiative Conference that will be held by the end of February as a critical step to support the Jordanian economy and to make sure that Jordan is on a sound economic path.

His Majesty stressed that there is no way of tolerating corruption, underscoring that abuse of public office is unacceptable regardless of the level of the employee.

While discussing issues on the regional level, His Majesty stressed Jordan's steadfast position on the Palestinian cause, affirming Jordan's full support to Palestinians until they get their legitimate rights to establish their independent state on their national soil with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The meeting also dealt with the developments in Syria, as His Majesty called on the need to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis in a way which preserves Syria's territorial integrity and ensures a safe return of refugees.

In addition, the meeting covered the recent visits by His Majesty to Iraq, Turkey, and Tunisia, which were aimed at enhancing cooperation between Jordan and these countries, especially in the economic fields.

For their part, former Prime Ministers stressed the importance of discussing various issues within a participatory approach to come up with solutions that meet the political, economic and social challenges.

They also noted the importance of supporting small and medium-sized enterprises that would reduce poverty and unemployment.

The meeting discussions also touched the importance of preserving Jordan's authority and symbolism.

The Former Prime Ministers praised the regional and international role played by King Abdullah to maintain the national strategic interests, as well as his pursuit of security and stability in the region.

The meeting was attended by former Prime Ministers Zeid Rifai, Ahmad Obeidat, Taher Masri, Abdul Salam Majali, Abdel Karim Kabariti, Fayez Tarawneh, Abdur-Rau'f Rawabdeh, Ali Abu Al Ragheb, Adnan Badran, Marouf Bakhit, Samir Rifai, Awn Khasawneh, and Abdullah Ensour. Moreover, Royal Hashemite Court Chief Yousef Issawi and Adviser to His Majesty and Director of the Office of His Majesty Manar Dabbas attended the meeting.
