A number of deputies, headed by MP Khalil Attieh, signed a parliamentary bill and submitted the proposal to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Atef Tarawneh, amending Article 17 of the ‘Domestic Violence Protection Law’ No. 15 of 2017.

Attieh justified his proposal to amend article 17 due to the unprecedented attacks on parents on social media platforms.

The bill suggested adding a new paragraph stating:

Notwithstanding the provisions of any other legislation, a penalty of no less than three years imprisonment and a fine of no less than five hundred Jordanian Dinars, and not more than five thousand Jordanian Dinars shall be imposed, or one of these two penalties for any who display ingratitude towards their parents by vilification, defamation, abandonment, negligence, getting their signature by force, or physically injuring them.
