Jordan to start issuing e-passports

Director of Civil Status and Passport Department, Fawaz Shahwan, revealed that the department is in the process of issuing biometric (electronic) passports.

Shahwan said in a press statement on Saturday, December 15, 2018, that the passport will be equipped with a scannable chip of data to shorten procedure time and which is safe and secure to use globally.

He pointed out that this type of passports has become a global requirement, adding that this will save the treasury about 17.5 million dinars.

Regarding smart card IDs that were issued to Jordanian citizens in the past period, Shahwan stated that the department has issued 4,400,000 cards so far, noting that the card has been awarded the best international card award for the year 2018 conference which was held in Vienna.
