Syrian refugees living informally in urban areas in Jordan fall under a campaign which aims to formalize their status in the Kingdom.

The Ministry of Interior announced on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, that it will be extending the campaign, which was launched on March 4, 2018, until March 31, 2019.

Any Syrian refugee who was registered at one of the camps and left them without prior authorization before July 1, 2017, and did not return, is automatically part of the campaign.

Other Syrians who can benefit from the project include those who entered the Kingdom but did not register with the government or the UNHCR.

The campaign will help Syrian refugees avoid any legal problems related to their legal status in the country, according to the Ministry of Interior.

When the campaign was first announced, over 20,000 Syrians successfully rectified their legal status in Jordan, with the support of the UNHCR.

UNHCR was grateful for the government’s extension of the campaign.

“UNHCR welcomes and commends the Government of Jordan’s extension until March 2019 of the rectification period for eligible Syrian refugees living informally in urban areas. Thanks to the support of the Government, over 20,000 Syrian refugees now have valid Ministry of Interior service cards, which facilitates access to essential services.”

The government has urged Syrian refugees living informally in urban areas of Jordan to come forward and benefit from the campaign. They can do so by visiting any of the UNHCR offices in Amman, Irbid or Mafraq, or any UNHCR helpdesks across the Kingdom.

Registering with the UNHCR is free and once the registration process has been completed, the refugees will be able to “finalise the regularization process and obtain an updated Ministry of Interior service card from the nearest police station,” the UN body said.

UNHCR offices and Helpline (06 400 8000) remain available during the upcoming five months to provide all the needed information to Syrian refugees in Jordan who can benefit from this campaign.
