A 17-year-old boy has died after being struck by lightning in al-Jafr city in the Ma’an Governorate, a medical source has said.

Dr. Waleed al-Ruwwad, General Manager of the Ma'an Government Hospital, told Roya that “the boy was hit by a lightning bolt while walking home.”

Ruwwad confirmed that the boy died before reaching the hospital.

Lightning strikes hundreds, thousands or millions of times a year, depending on which country you’re in.

According to National Geographic, cloud-to-ground lightning bolts are extremely powerful, containing up to one billion volts of electricity each.

Dozens of people are killed by lightning each year, but this is how you can avoid getting hurt (or killed) by the natural phenomenon.
