A Bengali domestic worker committed suicide by hanging at her place of residence in the industrial zone of Al Dulayl in the Zarqa Governorate, a security source has said.

The source did not specify whether the home belonged to the housemaid or her employer.

The 29-year-old woman took her own life on Sunday by tying a rope around her neck and attaching it to a ceiling fan.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.

Last year in February, another Bengali housemaid ended her life in Amman. Sadly, she committed suicide by hanging too.

Treating housemaids humanely and with respect is of the utmost importance.

A study has found that in the decade between 2006 and 2016, 48 of the 63 (76%) death cases of housemaids were due to unnatural causes. Among the reasons were suicides, sexual abuse and old injuries, the Jordan Times reported.

Because of the low salaries they receive, many housemaids are unable to travel back to their home countries to visit their family and friends. Sometimes it takes years before they’re reunited with their loved ones.

In most cases, this leads to depression and resentment, which is why it is essential to talk to your domestic worker and try to relate to the way she is feeling, and to provide her with the means to feel safe, happy and secure.
