Jordan is awaiting Israeli approval on its choice of new ambassador to Tel Aviv, the Jewish Press reported.

Israel has yet to respond to Jordan’s submission of Ghassan Majali as its candidate, according to officials from Jordan's Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Majali is a diplomat who previously served as the Kingdom’s ambassador to Spain.

Walid Obeidat has formerly served as the Ambassador to Israel for a period of five years, however, he has recently left his position in Tel Aviv.

Jordan’s MPs have fiercely opposed appointing a new envoy to Israel, arguing that “Palestinians should occupy Israel, not the other way around,” reported The Times of Israel.

The opposition is being led by MP Hazem Majali—who is Ghassan Majali's cousin—who said that "our fundamental stance is that the peace agreement with Israel should be abrogated and that Palestine's occupation must immediately cease.”

"We seek to scrap the (peace) agreement and don't succeed. The Palestinians are the ones who should occupy Israel and not the other way around. We stand with them in their just fight," Hazem Majali added.

Hazem Majali concluded that "the new ambassador should defend Jordan's interest, and mainly halt the activity of the occupation regime in Jerusalem.”
