Egyptian authorities foiled a suicide bombing attempt at a Coptic church outside Cairo on Saturday, the state-run Al Ahram newspaper reported.

The attack targeted the Coptic Virgin Mary Church in the Qalyubiyah governorate, north of the capital, where worshippers were gathered to celebrate the annual Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

After police officers prevented the bomber from approaching the church, he detonated the explosive belt he was wearing at a bridge outside the building.

No one was harmed in the incident, nor has any group claimed responsibility for the attack, according to CNN.

Egyptian Copts are the largest Christian community in Egypt and the Middle East and have long been the target of terrorist attacks.

In 2017, a deadly suicide bombing targeted worshippers at a Coptic church on Palm Sunday, while an explosion at Cairo’s Coptic Cathedral left 28 people dead the previous year.
