A decision was made to increase the price of one type of bread, “khobez hamam,” to 55 Piastres per kilo, and another type of crunchy bread, known as “qurshalleh,” starting Thursday.
However, Head of the Bakery Owners Association, Abdel Elah Al Hamawi, told Roya that just hours after the decision was made, the Association and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply agreed to keep the prices as they are.
Al Hamawi noted that the prices will remain the same until a new decision has been reached with the Ministry.
Mr. Al Hamawi was also keen to explain that they’re aiming to raise the price threshold, not the prices per se.
The price of bread and some baked goods have remained unchanged over the past decade.
At the end of last year, former PM Hani Al Mulki and his government ordered the Association to postpone raising the prices of khobez hamam and qurshalleh so that they weren’t linked to the lifting of bread subsidies, which caused nationwide controversy at the time.
