A Jordanian family gave their newborn baby girl the name Assaudia [Standard Arabic for Saudi Arabian].

The parents who live in Mafraq governorate, located 80 km to the north of the capital Amman, told Saudi newspaper Okaz that they were offered money from outside Jordan to change the name, but they have turned the offer down. .

The mother, Nadia S., explained that her love for both Saudi people and Saudi leadership is the main reason behind naming her now-seven-months old daughter. “My family and friends were shocked when they first heard the name, but soon grew to like it, and now everyone admires it,” she added.

Nadia then revealed the story of how she and her spouse came up with the name; “The minute we knew we’re pregnant with a girl, we decided on naming her Assaudia. And after giving birth, my husband went off to officially register it.”

This is not the first time Jordanian parents make a controversial decision with their child’s name. In 2017, a Jordanian named his son ‘Faisaly’. The father explained that his choice was based on his extreme love to the local football sports club of the same name.

In the same year, a Palestinian man from Gaza named his triplet: Jerusalem, Capital and Palestine - where the three names combined form the sentence: 'Jerusalem is Palestine’s capital' - in an attempt to protest against Trump’s decision in moving the US embassy to Jerusalem.
